From the earliest time in American history, safe and secure movement of military personnel and supplies was essential. American volunteers, engineering experts and American industry responded to the call of the nation through WW I.  Nineteen thirty-six marked the beginning of what was to become the Merchant Marines in the global mission of unarmed support of the U.S. war effort. As Liberty Ship fleets grew, life-and-death naval actions were part of their mission.

Yet, despite their history and medal-award-winning bravery, Merchant Marines were not considered to be veterans. Through film and archival photos, Michael Maleno will tell the story of the Merchant Marine and their vital role during World War II.
