In this presentation, New York Times bestselling author Matthew Goodman will discuss his new book, The City Game: Triumph, Scandal, and a Legendary Basketball Team. The book tells the story of the 1949-50 City College Beavers, a team composed entirely of black and Jewish players, who shocked the basketball world by becoming the only team in history to win the NIT and NCAA tournaments in the same year. Just a year later, the team’s star players were arrested for conspiring with gamblers; they confessed and were thrown out of college and banned from basketball forever. Overnight they went from being heroes to villains. Yet, as Matthew Goodman has discovered, the true story is far larger and more emotionally affecting: a story of loyalty, of personal and political corruption, and of the consequences of youthful decisions that last a lifetime.
